“Retention is guarded outside the bedroom: sattvic food, fixed sleep, chosen company, clean media. The complete discipline code.”
The Vow Is Guarded Off the Battlefield
Ask long-term practitioners and they rarely talk about resisting dramatic temptation. They talk about food, sleep, company and media. Retention leaks through lifestyle cracks long before crisis moments.
Food: Eat to Be Calm, Not Dull
- Prefer fresh, simple, moderate meals; heavy, very spicy and stale foods aggravate restlessness.
- Light early dinner; avoid eating to stupor at night.
- Zero intoxicants — alcohol and drugs dissolve the very discrimination the vow needs.
- Fast lightly and regularly if your constitution allows (traditional weekly or fortnightly fasts).
Sleep: The Non-Negotiable
Fixed hours, cool dark room, empty bladder, side posture, immediate rising. Tired men relapse; rested men choose. Guard the last hour (no feeds) and the first minutes (no snooze-fantasy).
Company & Media
- Reduce time with company whose currency is lust-talk, gossip and intoxication. Be polite, be brief, be busy.
- Curate inputs ruthlessly: unsubscribe, block, delete. Attention is the womb of desire.
- Add one elevating association weekly — study circle, service, training group, temple or nature time.
The Discipline Checklist
Training done? Dinner light and early? Screens off? Vow stated? Log written? Five yeses a day hold the vow better than one heroic resistance a month.
